Dr. Harvel Brown was born into a farming family in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. He obtained his degree from Temple University after serving in the military for six years.  He has collaborated with USDA in developing new ways of farming based on a Vertical Integration Method, which involves raising cattle, supporting the soil, producing food for chicken farms, and using the effluent from the chickens to make fuel and food for the fish farms. He has traveled to Nigeria, Liberia, and Grenada to assist in implementing this method. Since 2003, he has done consultant work with USDA and North Star Group, developing new Aquaculture methods. Black Farmers News Letter Volume #2

The Black Farmers Cooperative “BFC”
BFC has completed its 3rd week of Workforce Development at PHS. It is truly exciting to experience individuals embracing challenging concepts. One thing that is most difficult is “Changing One’s Perception”. All of us are raised seeing and hearing a host of concepts and it is a daunting task to challenge what we have come to believe to be our truth. But in reality, we should question why we believe something is true. That is a form of self-reflection, a key component to our personal growth and development. And to go deeper it is a path to self-care. We also discussed Adult Literacy and the numbers for Philadelphia is not encouraging. But a difference can be made.

URBAN BLOOM GARDEN AMBASSADORS PROGRAM “BFC”
Our Urban Bloom workshops are blooming. This week we had extensive presentations and discussions on the benefits of composting. In reality it is a way to reduce waste and in turn help save the planet. Our second presentation was on building Raised Beds. They are necessary because in Philadelphia the soil has to be remediated because of the high lead content. We encourage everyone to have their soil tested. The USDA and University of Pennsylvania do it for free. So folk, Happy Gardening! BFC needs volunteers for our Bartram High School gardening program. Please email: Blackfarmerscoop2022@gmail.com
We look forward to hearing from you!
